Thankfully, it’s not going to be a remake of the original classic but a sequel which is apparently going to be quite an event movie. Black stated “There’s great Predator movies, but to actually play with the idea of making it an event, not necessarily in scale—it doesn’t have to be huge—but it just has to feel like a Predator movie you want to see in the summer and line up for it. And that’s what we’re going for. Let’s get back to the excitement and innovation of that original movie where it felt fresh. I just want to find a way to make it feel fresh and that’s what we’re trying to do.”
There has been a lot of news recently with Black discussing the movie so let’s take a look at what we know about the movie so far…
It’s going to be R Rated for sure; in a recent interview with Den of Geek Black states “I made a condition of my participation with Predator that it be the same rating as the first movie, and the first movie was Rated R. In other words, I don’t want to cut away every time the Predator does something violent. I was watching the American version of The Grudge, which was PG-13, and I remember being so frustrated by the fact that everything that was scary in the Japanese version, they had to cut away from in the PG-13 American version. There’s also a sensibility and a sense of brooding menace and we can have fun but there’s an element of horror that’s unmistakable in The Predator,” he continued. “I don’t want to have to compromise it by just treating it like a popcorn film. That said, I hope there’s some popcorn viewing available in it, too. It’s an R-rated popcorn movie, which is the best kind to me.”
The Predator costume will be Organically Different; while talking with Superhero Hype he said “It’s not to ‘improve,’ it’s make it fun, make it different, make it organically different. So what’s the extension of it that makes sense, that’s exciting? There have been a lot of changes to Stan’s design over the years. These different Predator movies have done different things. Ultimately it’s not about design to me, it’s about the story you want to tell. There are people who are always going to agonize over Iron Man, what color his suit is. Maybe this weapon does a new thing, but if the story is not good I don’t give a sh*t what color the suit is. In ‘The Predator’ we’re doing a lot of upgrades to what you would consider to be the traditional Predator technology and look, but hopefully the story is what’s going to drag people in, not just the attention to the minutiae.”
Arnold MAY return; it’s the question all fans are asking and the fact that Shane Black isn’t allowed to talk about it is a very positive sign. He talked to Collider saying “We have not talked about it, which is good because I’m not supposed to talk about it anyway. Not supposed to talk about details of the script. And I shouldn’t.”
It will be set in the present day so if you’re expecting a futuristic Predator homeworld set movie then this ain’t it.
It will be closely modeled towards John McTiernan’s classic original: “I was reluctant to. If you look at the opening of the first Predator, with the helicopters coming in and landing with the smoke and the native people… It was so compelling because it established a world in which this is still mysterious for you. It’s not a sci-fi world. It was so fresh back then, like a “why didn’t I think of that, what the fuck?” quality to it. I’d like to get back to a movie where it’s three months out and people are like, “Let’s get our tickets now because we’re aware of this, it seems like they put the money and attention into it, it’s not just a knock-off.” Really try to get back to that feeling of wonderment, mystery and adventure. A fresh movie. Without giving away details, that’s been our goal. To say, “What’s the John McTiernan and Joel Silver of this, and how do we get back to that?”
It’s Official Release Date is March 2nd, 2018!
Well I don’t know about you, kids but I’m excited and can’t wait to get a look at this bad boy. Shame it’s not out until 2018. Siiiigh.
