Most Anticipated Actioners of 2017

Happy New Year! So 2016 is finally over and people can stop whining about it. Now we can look ahead with hopefulness that 2017 will have some quality action movies. There are tons coming up so let’s take a look at our most anticipated actioners of 2017.

Coming in January we have the return of Selene (Kate Beckinsale) in Underworld: Blood Wars however, early word is that it’s pretty bad so I may wait for the DVD.  Resident Evil: The Final Chapter will also be unleashed on January 27th with Milla Jovovich returning as Alice apparently for the last time. But I’ll believe that when I see it.

Lee posted a trailer the other day to a movie called Jailbreak which looks all kinds of awesome; it`s about a group of Special Task Force Officers that are sent to Koh Kla prison where they detain the country’s top criminals. What started as a simple escort mission will soon turn into chaos as the prisoners take over the prison grounds. Trapped in the building, our 4 heroes will have to get their way out for survival, or die trying.

I’m not sure when we’ll actually get a release date but hopefully we get to see Boyka: Undisputed at some point in 2017 as I am frankly bored of talking about it. Thankfully Scott Adkins has a few other projects on the way in 2017. First off is Savage Dog from director Jesse Johnson which co-stars Marko Zaror, Cung Le, Juju Chan and Keith David. The story centers on a disgraced soldier-turned-prizefighter seeking vengeance in a lawless town in 1950s Indochina. We also have Accident Man which is also directed by Jesse Johnson with fight choreography from Tim Man.

Alain Moussi and JCVD return in Kickboxer: Retaliation; this time they are joined by Christopher Lambert, Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson and Mike Tyson. It’s set one year after the events of “Kickboxer: Vengeance”, where Kurt Sloan has vowed never to return to Thailand. However, while gearing up for a MMA title shot, he finds himself sedated and forced back into Thailand, this time in prison. He is there because the ones responsible want him to face a 6’8″ 400 lbs. beast named Mongkut and in return for the fight, Kurt will get two million dollars and his freedom back. Kurt at first refuses, in which a bounty is placed on his head as a way to force him to face Mongkut. Kurt soon learns he will have no other choice and will undergo his most rigorous training yet under some unexpected mentors in order to face Mongkut in hopes to regain his freedom.

In Accident Man Scott Adkins plays hitman Mike Fallon, who got his professional alias because he’s known for making assassinations look like accidents. But when his ex-girlfriend Beth is murdered by his own crew, Mike’s outlook changes quickly. The cast also includes Ray Stevenson, Ashley Greene, David Paymer, Michael Jai White and Ray Park.

XXX: Return of Xander Cage hits theatres on January 20th and despite some dodgy trailers and clips I’m still looking forward to it mostly due to Tony Jaa and Donnie Yen.

Vin Diesel returns once again for Fate of the Furious which looks every bit as ridiculous as previous entries but if we go in treating it like the Saturday morning cartoon that it is then we’ll have a blast. Also just why is Dom turning to the Dark Side? Guess we’ll just have to wait and see…

Tony Jaa has a few films in development and I’m not sure if Triple Threat is out in 2017 but it starts shooting in February and with a cast that includes Jaa, Iko Uwais and Tiger Chen then I’m understandably excited about it. Did I mention that it’s directed by John Wick’s Chad Stahelski? So yeah, bring that on ASAP please. Tony also stars in a movie called Paradox (formally called Fate) with Sammo Hung, Louis Koo and Wu Yue with Wilson Yip directing.

Donnie Yen is Crippled Ho in King of Drug Dealers which tells the tale of an illegal immigrant from Mainland China that sneaks into corrupt British-colonized Hong Kong in 1963, transforming himself into a ruthless and emerging drug lord.

One movie which people aren’t talking about much is Kong: Skull Island but I think it looks awesome and I will be there opening night. Great cast vs. big monsters? Sold!

Jean-Claude Van Damme and Daniel Bernhardt are set to battle one another in the upcoming Kill ‘Em All which is described as a “fast paced action/thriller, where Die Hard meets The Usual Suspects”.

Isaac Florentine’s latest movie Stoic could be his biggest yet with a cast that includes Antonio Banderas and Karl Urban. It’s the story of a fast-talking lawyer who transforms his body and takes a vow of silence, not to be broken until he finds out who killed his wife and daughter and has his revenge.

The trailer for Alien: Covenant didn’t disappoint and looks like it will be the hard R nightmare we want it to be with Ridley Scott returning to the director’s chair. It bursts into theatres May 19, 2017.

There are as always a ton of superhero movies coming up including Spider-Man: Homecoming, Logan, Thor: Ragnarok, Justice League, Wonder Woman and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. I’m more of a DC guy so I can’t to see what Justice League and Wonder Woman will be like but I’m also really looking forward to Guardians 2 as the first one remains my favourite Marvel movie.

Tom Cruise and Russell Crowe take on The Mummy in Universal’s new reboot which didn’t exactly excite too many people with the first trailer but I’ll be there to check it out anyway as Cruise rarely makes a bad movie.

Eggsy (Taron Egerton) and Merlin (Mark Strong) travel to the United States to join forces with their American counterparts in Kinsgman: The Golden Circle which has Matthew Vaughn returning as director and comes out in September.

The Apes continue to dominate the planet but this time it’s a full on battle against mankind in War for the Planet of the Apes which looks like Woody Harrelson will be stealing the show as a a ruthless colonel hellbent on taking back the planet.

Optimus Prime returns in Transformers: The Last Knight and I’m nearly hopeful it will be fun as the trailer looked pretty sweet but we’ve been fooled before so my expectations are low at best.

Star Wars: Episode VIII flies in to theatres in December but after the sad passing of Carrie Fisher just last week the movie will be given an extra somber tone (for me at least), knowing that it was her last journey to a Galaxy, far, far away….

I’ve already seen Headshot but it should be out early in 2017 and I recommend it to fans of The Raid and hyper-violent action flicks.

I don’t think any of us thought we’d ever see a Blade Runner sequel but in 2017 it will finally come true with Ryan Gosling joining Harrison Ford in Blade Runner 2049. Ridley Scott produces but the film is directed by Denis Villeneuve with a story about Officer K (Ryan Gosling), a new blade runner for the Los Angeles Police Department, who unearths a long-buried secret that has the potential to plunge what’s left of society into chaos. His discovery leads him on a quest to find Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), a former blade runner who’s been missing for 30 years.

My most anticipated of year was actually my most anticipated of last year as I thought John Wick: Chapter 2 was going to be out in 2016 but instead it will be out in February and I still can’t wait to see it.

Those are the main movies hitting theatres in 2017 that I’m interested in watching but there will no doubt be some under the radar movies coming too so we’d best start saving those pennies now.

I grew up watching JCVD, Sly and Arnold destroy bad guys, blow things up and spew one-liners like it's a fashion statement. Action is everything I go to the movies for and the reason I came up with this site is to share my love for the genre with everyone. We also want to help promote new talent whether you're making blockbusters, low-budget Indie movies or fan films; if it's action, it's awesome.
