Atomic Blonde: Hit or Miss?

There are only a handful of action movies coming out for the rest of this year that have my attention but the one which I am most intrigued by is the upcoming Charlize Theron movie Atomic Blonde from John Wick director David Leitch. It tells the story of Her Majesty’s Secret Intelligence Service Agent Lorraine Broughton (Theron) who is equal parts spycraft, sensuality and savagery, willing to deploy any of her skills to stay alive on her impossible mission. Sent alone into Berlin to deliver a priceless dossier out of the destabilized city, she partners with embedded station chief David Percival (James McAvoy) to navigate her way through the deadliest game of spies.

It’s been shown at a few festivals and has so far had critics and fans raving about it, especially one particular action scene on a stairwell which Cinemarunner describes as “a fight scene so marvelous, that even if you end up not particularly caring for it, you will at least walk away remembering that one scene. If an action movie can have one scene that can be that memorable, then it must be doing something right.”

High praise indeed and from the trailers the action looks very impressive channeling 80’s style with John Wick action. When I first read the synopsis and heard that Broughton was going to be a HMSIS Agent I immediately thought we were getting a female James Bond however, there have been comparisons more with Munich and just watching the trailers you can already tell this will be a more violent affair than any 007 feature.

Apparently Theron has been doing 4-5 hours of physical training each day for 3 months, where she worked with director Leitch and the 87eleven Action Design team so I think it’s safe to say that with this and Mad Max she has really become one of the most dedicated action stars working today with Lorraine Broughton also set to become an iconic character.

I’ve heard many genre fans wonder how it may be hard to believe some of the action scenes as Charlize is taking on people twice her size but it is just a movie people and with the right training and a swift kick to the balls the majority of opponents can be taken down so I don’t really consider it an issue. I love the fact that she uses things like Stilettos as weapons and the action looks fierce so I say bring it on!

It has a budget of $30 million so I don’t see it having any issues at the box office so we could be on to a winner.

Check out what early reviews have been stating below.

“The action genre will never be the same” is a bold statement but Atomic Blonde is now at the top of my must-see list for the rest of the year. Let’s hope it lives up to the early hype.

So will Atomic Blonde be a hit or a miss? I think it will be a hit and may well be the action movie of the year.
