Remembering Alien War

To celebrate the release of Alien: Covenant this week it got me thinking of a long time ago in a Galaxy Far, Far Away… sorry, wrong franchise.

Now many of you may be too young to remember way back in 1992 but I’m really old so it actually feels like yesterday.

In Glasgow, Scotland (where I come from) around the time of the release of the much anticipated Alien 3 we had an awesome Scare Attraction called Alien War. It was in a place called The Arches which  normally houses dance concerts, raves and other noisy things youngsters are into these days. But for a period in 1992 it was the home of Alien War where you and a group of other people would be led by an actor (playing a Colonial Marine) though a series of dark tunnels made up to look like the set of Aliens and you guessed it, you get attacked by the Xenomorphs… or dudes in costumes dressed like them.

It may sound lame but it was actually bloody terrifying as the Aliens even made the hissing sounds from the movies which made the skin crawl and felt very real. At one point I remember we were in an elevator which “breaks down” and the doors are ripped open and an Alien reaches in and takes away a member of the group. I’m pretty sure said group member was also an actor as there would be all kinds of legal problems if someone was taken by accident and had a heart attack. There was a rumour that had happened actually but I’m pretty sure that was just to create some buzz.

It was such a unique idea at the time and this was long before the days of the internet and it really built up hype for the movie. I believe they brought Alien War back in 2008 in Glasgow but I would love it if they brought it back on a more international scale now using today’s technology. It would have been the perfect time to release it for Covenant but sadly not. It may be because it was associated with Alien 3 and apparently Ridley didn’t like the movie.

Anyway, does anybody remember Alien War? Did you go to it?  Here is some teaser footage below…
