Summary
Re-Kill isn’t an amazing film but it does have plenty of action and gore to keep fans entertained.
Plot: It’s been 5 years since the outbreak that infected most of the world’s population, but the war between Re-Animates (Re-Ans) and Humans still rages. Within the few inhabitable cities, Re-Ans are segregated into “zones” policed by R-Division soldiers, who target them in hopes of quelling a second outbreak. “R-Division: Frontline” is the number one TV show in the Post-Apocalyptic world. Every week the show follows different R-Division units as they work to keep America Re-An free. Jimmy, a videographer for the Outbreak Network, thought this week’s episode would be like every other, but through his eyes and his camera we see raw footage of what just may be mankind’s last days.
Review: We’ve literally been waiting years for this movie and finally After Dark have released Re-Kill via their 8 Films to Die For. So has it been worth the very long wait? Well it’s certainly not a game changer but it’s actually pretty entertaining.
It’s clearly influenced by Paul Verhoeven as there are mock ads every few minutes just like in RoboCop, although these ads are more intrusive and end up getting annoying as they happen too often.
The biggest weakness of the film is actually the handheld camera; this is essentially a found footage movie which means shaky cam galore and incoherent action scenes. It’s a shame as otherwise it’s pretty slick with plenty of action and gunfire; it’s one hell of a noisy film and has some quality moments of gore too.
You won’t care about too many of the characters though as they are all just expendable; Scott Adkins’ character is actually a bit of a dick and isn’t really the hero of the tale. That would be Sarge played by Roger Cross who is the only character that provides any real heart to proceedings.
Bruce Payne (Passenger 57) has a decent sized role as well so it’s great to see him play a hero for once rather than the creepy villain.
It’s very much open for a sequel and if we got one I’d probably watch it, but I’d want to get rid of the found footage element and then we could have something rather special.
It does have an Aliens vibe and there is a constant feeling of threat throughout which was a nice touch.
Overall, Re-Kill isn’t an amazing film but it does have plenty of action and gore to keep fans entertained. It’s just a shame about the handheld camerawork and intrusive “comedy” ads. Worth watching as a rental.
