Home Invasion (2016) Review

Verdict
3.5

Summary

Home Invasion starts off well and Adkins makes for an entertaining villain but the kid is annoying as Hell and there are too many unbelievable moments to make this anything other than a generic action thriller.

Plot: Terror arrives at the one place we all feel safest in this taut psychological thriller starring Natasha Henstridge, Jason Patric and Scott Adkins. When a wealthy woman and her stepson are targeted by a trio of expert thieves in their remote mansion, her only form of help comes from a call with a security systems specialist. But as the intruders become increasingly hostile and the connection wavers, will she trust him to be her eyes and navigate her to safety?

Review: Home Invasion came out in February and only now did I finally get to sit down and give it a watch.

After an exciting opening scene that really grabs the attention it sadly quickly unravels into a generic thriller but is redeemed by Scott Adkins playing a (non-Russian) villain.

Natasha Henstridge does the best with what she is given but the rest of cast including Jason Patric aren’t given much else to do. The security company only seem to hire inept idiots who panic more than the victims of the home invasion which feels totally unbelievable.

There are also too many stupid character decisions and coincidences which caused some eye rolling; like they’re about the escape in the car then lightning strikes and short circuits the garage door so it won’t open? My arse…

The biggest flaw with the movie though is the kid Jacob; Oh my God, what an annoying little shit. I wanted him to be the first victim in the movie but he sadly survives. He’s obnoxious and rude so we feel no empathy for him at all; I find a lot of TV shows and movies show American kids to behave like this except in real life they are actually quite nice. If I had a child who behaved like him they would be in the basement for a month on a bread and water diet… so probably best that I remain single.

It does get quite tense at times but we’re never given any real character development to care about anyone. It reminded me of Hostage, The Strangers and a few other movies in the genre… all of which were superior.

Overall, Home Invasion starts off well and Adkins makes for an entertaining villain but the kid is annoying as Hell and there are too many unbelievable moments to make this anything other than a generic action thriller.
