Review:

The Star Trek universe is a vast and rewarding trove of stories and soundtracks. From its inception for television in 1966 where it ran for three seasons, and as it broadened its horizon to feature films and more television spin offs, Star Trek in general has aged finely and seems to get better as we move on in years.

La La Land Records has really given fans of the franchise some amazing treasures in the way of soundtracks in the past handful of years. In addition to their stellar box set containing all the music from the original T.V. show, they’ve produced great sets from The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, and Enterprise, as well as expanding Jerry Goldsmith’s scores to Star Trek: The Motion Picture and Star Trek V: The Final Frontier. Now they’ve culled together some of the best cues and tracks from all of the movies, series’, videogames, and theme park attractions combined in a four-disc set so that casual fans can get a taste of some of the music that cross-pollinates throughout the whole franchise.

Almost all of the music contained in this collection had already been released in some variation from La La Land, but the biggest selling point for me was that it contains (in a world premier format) all of the music from Star Trek: The Animated Series. It was great fun to listen to that music (it’s on Disc 2), as that cartoon holds a special place in my heart. There’s so much more music here to be found that fans of the franchise will love hearing, like the score to the theme park attraction Star Trek: The Experience, for example. Where else are you going to find the music to that? Here!

For the completist and for true fans of Star Trek, this collection may feel a little like double dipping in the same well, but I really enjoyed it … and I’m not even a hardcore Trekkie!

Limited to only 3000 units, grab one before it’s gone!
