The Girl With All the Gifts (2016) Review
Summary: A scientist and a teacher living in a dystopian future embark on a journey of survival with a special young girl named Melanie.
Review: The “hungries” have eaten their way through the world. A fungal virus devastated the planet, and the human population has dwindled to a few choice strongholds. The hungries (zombies of a different sort) have massed at the gates of a stronghold in the UK, and a doctor (played by Glenn Close) is very near to discovering a cure. But there’s an unusual catch: Children infected with the virus have managed to not go full-bore zombie yet. The cure lies somewhere in their DNA, but the children in captivity to the human faction must be experimented on (and killed) in order for the experiments to continue. A soldier named Helen (played by Gemma Arterton) has grown very fond of a child named Melanie (played by newcomer Sennia Nanua), who has been chosen to be the next in line for experiments, but before she can be killed, the hungries overtake the stronghold and pandemonium forces a quick evacuation of the few humans left. A Sgt. named Parks (Paddy Considine), the doctor, Helen, Melanie, and two other soldiers make it out alive, but while on the run their chances of survival dwindle as the hungries have literally taken over every city and town in every direction. With a wild card (Melanie) in their company, they manage to make their way to a secure location, but several huge problems lie before them: the hungries are evolving into tree-like structures filled with spore clusters that could make the virus airborne, and packs of wild children infected with the virus prowl the city streets, looking to devour anything that moves.
A challenging and radically unique and surprising zombie apocalypse film, The Girl With All the Gifts goes places no other apocalyptic movie has gone before. The story is continuously surprising and fascinating, and the film, as directed by Colm McCarthy is spry and sharp, with a unique spin that’s all his own. The movie is based on a book by Mike Carey, and this will go down as one of the most radical and fascinating zombie apocalypse movies of the new millennium. It’s one of the best I’ve seen.
