Summary

A pretty impressive and tension-filled war film with some great, memorable action scenes.

Plot: During the height of World War II, a courageous group of resistance fighters are given a suicide mission to deliver a stolen Nazi submarine filled with atomic uranium.

Review: A peerless and fearless team of Belgian commandos are called in to undertake an impossible mission at the height of World War II: Train for three weeks to commandeer a German submarine filled with a shipment of uranium to deliver to the U.S. so that the balance of war can be tipped against Hitler’s seemingly unstoppable army. The team has never operated a sub before, and so a turncoat German captain quickly teaches them the basics, and due to an emergency, they must cut their training short and be thrown into their mission still unprepared for their task. They run afoul of other German subs and battleships (resulting in several extremely close-call torpedo runs), and even get boarded by Germans, forcing the rookie crew to act purely from their survival instincts to stay alive and afloat. From one calamity to the next, the renegade crew must do or die … and give it everything they’ve got, or the balance of war will forever be shifted the wrong way.

A pretty impressive and tension-filled war film with some great, memorable action scenes, the Flemish-made Torpedo: U-235 had me on the edge of my seat in some scenes, and it consistently felt like an under-the-radar blockbuster worthy of U.S. cinema screens. From its grueling flashback scenes involving Nazis killing one of the crew’s family members, to gunfights with airplanes, or torpedo dodging and sinking ships, the film really has it all, including plenty of character development and suspense. I’m not really sure what I was expecting, but this movie never shortchanged in any department. From director Sven Huybrechts.

Epic recently released a really nice region-free Blu-ray that presents the film in high definition, with a making-of feature, as well as trailers, teasers, and an English dubbed version, as well as English subtitles.
