Do you like movies and shows that are fast-paced and have characters that get things done no matter what?
For me, this is why action will always be my go-to genre. Not only does it provide a thrilling escapism from a boring life, but it also features adrenaline-filled action sequences that keep you glued to the screen.
No wonder movies like Mission Impossible and James Bond get so many sequels. But there is so much more to the action genre than just these English franchises.
I have compiled a list of my favorite underrated and famous action-packed shows in Spanish. The best part about this list is that it is not long, and won’t leave you feeling indecisive.
Before we get into it, a high-speed internet connection is crucial for streaming movies and shows online. Let us get to the action-packed TV show recommendations I have for you.
Entrevias (Wrong Side of the Tracks)
The show is an action thriller that features an ex-military grandfather who decides to avenge his teenage granddaughter. The grandfather, Tirzo, is not your average grandfather. He is blunt, fiercely loyal, and isn’t scared to throw around curse words.
He pairs up with a bad cop Ezequiel to square up to the criminals who assaulted his granddaughter.
With an IMDb rating of 7, it is highly engaging and contains the right amount of lleno de acción (action-packed) thrills. It’s entertaining and pushes you out of your comfort zone by showing the disturbing realities of the drug mafia and dark politics among people.
You can follow along Tirzo in Entrevia on Netflix.
Griselda
This is a Netflix miniseries that centers on the Columbian drug lord Griselda Blanco. While the show might not be Hispanic, it is available to watch in Spanish and was too good to be left out of this list.
With dark character development, a gripping drug cartel plot, and a majorly Latino cast – the show features just the right amount of thrills. It follows how Griselda makes her space in the Miami cocaine landscape and becomes a narco-queen.
The show is violent, gritty, and hooks you right off the bat. I love how they made it into a mini-series since a movie would’ve been too short, and a series would have dragged the plot. The show has an IMDb rating of 7.2 and wows the audience with Sofia Vergara’s stunning portrayal of the brutal drug queen and her self-destructive thirst for power.
La Victima Número 8 (Victim Number 8)
Drawing inspiration from the Barcelona attacks in August 2017, La Victima Número 8 is a Spanish thriller about the Bilbao terrorist bombing. The show strikes an equal balance between action and suspense as the lead, Omar, is kidnapped and framed for the attack.
The show has a perfect dramatic appeal, as the lead’s girlfriend teams up with a disgraced journalist to uncover a deeper plot, based on just a conspiracy.
Apart from thrilling sequences, police chases, and a government-level conspiracy, the show also explores themes of Xenophobia against Muslims. I like how the meaningful plot makes it more than a baseless action drama. Also, it is a fresh break from typical terrorist plots with its characters that have depth and intricate backstories.
It has one season and is available to watch on Netflix.
El Dragón: Return of a Warrior
The 2019 series is a must-watch action-packed, crime thriller series. El Dragón: Return of a Warrior features a finance guy from Tokyo, who returns to Mexico, back into his family’s involvement in the cartel life.
Miguel’s story is thrilling as he has to take his grandfather’s place as a cartel’s head. With gang rivalries, drug trafficking, and high-stakes scenarios, the show will have you sitting on the edge of your seat throughout.
The way Miguel is thrust into a position of power defines how he deals with moral dilemmas as he has to preserve his family’s legacy. All of that, when he is surrounded by people who wouldn’t think twice about betraying him. The Spanish drama is filled with action, violence, gripping storylines, and complex characters.
The show has two seasons and is available to watch both on Netflix and Amazon Prime.
To sum it up, I feel like nothing beats Hispanic dramas in terms of action-based plots, where morally complex characters are thrown into cartel-related storylines. These shows will thrill you while involving you in their intricate plots.
