High-Octane
Summary
Get Fast rarely takes its foot off the gas with plenty of action and a quick pace with James Clayton proving not only a cool lead but an interesting director too. We shall watch his career with great interest…
Plot: After a heist goes wrong, a thief and a troubled orphan must rescue his kidnapped partner from a ruthless drug lord and her charming hitman. With guns, cars, and explosions, their escape is a high-stakes race against time.
Review: I knew I was going to enjoy Get Fast when within the first 5 seconds we hear Dare by Stan Bush and the film opens with a cracking action scene. It involves our thieves (James Clayton & Philip Granger) trying to escape with some stolen money and having to do battle with various goons.
I love how there are real helicopters in this movie and as much as possible there are practical effects making this a genuinely entertaining throwback to classic action movies.
There is the odd CG explosion, but I think if this movie had a bigger budget director/star James Clayton would have done it all in camera as he clearly loves the genre. The movie has a sense of fun that I really enjoyed with Clayton bringing roguish charm to his character. Lou Diamond Phillips also shines as the villainous Cowboy who despite not being a good guy you like him anyway mostly because it’s Lou Diamond Phillips.
Get Fast is under 90 minutes and manages to pack in plenty of action although I did find the character of Tom (Suleiman Abutu) could have been better; I was hoping that by the end he would go from coward to badass, but instead he does what is required to survive.
I like how there is a quietly profound line in the film where The Thief says “that’s what life’s about – doing things”. Sometimes we all get caught up In work and responsibilities that you forget to go out there and do cool stuff. After watching it I went out all weekend and had a blast. Anyway, I really liked the character of The Thief and wouldn’t mind if we get a sequel with further adventures.
Overall, Get Fast is a fun ride with great music and some awesome action scenes making this one of the more entertaining straight to video action movies I’ve seen this year.
