Summary

Ghost Killer may have too crazy a plot for some tastes, but it has the best final fight scenes you’ll see this year which alone makes this worth checking out.

Plot: When college student Fumika (Akari Takaishi) stumbles upon the bullet that ended hitman Kudo’s (Masanori Mimoto) life, his vengeful spirit takes hold of her body. Now possessed by a ruthless assassin’s rage and skills, she becomes an unstoppable force, hunting down those responsible for his death. As the body count rises, the line between Fumika and Kudo begins to blur. From the action director of Baby Assassins, One-Percent Warrior, and Bad City, GHOST KILLER delivers a furious tale of supernatural revenge.

Review: Ghost Killer has one of the most outrageous storylines of the year, but if you can get past that then you’re in for a treat.

It opens with Kudo taking on multiple opponents and after defeating them he gets taken out by a mysterious assassin. We then join College student Fumika who comes home one day and finds Kudo standing in her apartment, but no one else can see him; because she picked up the bullet that killed him she can see his ghost.

Kudo has the ability to possess Fumika which gives her a particular set of fighting skills. She reluctantly agrees to help Kudo find the people who killed him while also stopping the organization who drug and assault women.

It takes a little while for the next fight scene as Fumika tries to deal with the fact there is a ghost following her everywhere. She can be a little shrill and annoying at times, but when she is taken over by Kudo the film kicks into gear.

The final fight scene is what makes this film really worth watching as it lasts about 15 minutes and is easily the best you’ll see this year. As this is from the director of the Baby Assassins movies I feel like I need to watch them now as Kensuke Sonomura clearly understands action.

The music is also a highlight as it features some Gregorian chants over dance music which works really well in establishing the mood.

Overall, Ghost Killer may be out there in terms of story and Fumika is a little annoying at times, but it’s one of the year’s best action movies for the fight scenes alone, especially the finale which is fantastic.
