Plot: Life is an adventure for space scavengers Kip Corman and his daughter Taylor as they navigate their ship through a universe filled with monsters, aliens, and robots in order to reach the mythical Deepstar and collect the riches within.
Space Wars: Quest for the Deepstar is worth watching for the cast alone which features Olivier Gruner and Michael Paré. The film clearly has a low budget, but it’s hard to dislike due to the sheer fun nature of the story and appealing cast. Olivier Gruner still manages to be likeable even when playing a villain, and the film gives us what we want in terms of action. We get several fight scenes, space battles and CG monsters making this a fast-paced 90 minutes.
I’ve seen worse visual effects in bigger budget movies and to be fair it’s part of the charm of Space Wars as it feels like a throwback the kinds of sci-action movies we got in the 80s.
I like the idea of capturing someone’s essence after they die where you can keep their soul and create a cyborg like being to bring back your loved ones. It’s a very sci-fi concept and gives the film some heart as our father daughter team of Taylor (Sarah French) and Kep (Paré) want to bring back their mother/wife.
There is some hilarious over-acting from some of the villains, but it just adds to the fun factor making this an easy watch.
Overall, Space Wars: Quest for the Deepstar may be low on budget, but it’s high on ambition and having Olivier Gruner and Michael Paré in your cast makes this a fun time.
