Ironheart: Mini Series (2025) Review

Disappointing
2.5

Summary

Ironheart has some decent fight scenes throughout the series, but it doesn’t really matter when our lead character is selfish and rarely sympathetic. I liked some of the supporting cast and the music had its moments, but you can probably skip this one.

Plot: Genius teenage inventor Riri Williams creates the most advanced suit of armor since Iron Man.

Review: The latest Marvel series Ironheart released its first three episodes last night; many seemed to have wanted this to fail before it was even released as it has already been “review bombed”.

As you all know, I’m not a big comicbook guy, so I’m not really familiar with the characters in this series; this is just a review of the show itself.

Ironheart continues the story of Riri Williams (Dominique Thorne) who we saw in Wakanda Forever, a genius inventor who gets expelled from school and starts working with a group of criminals, so she can continue to improve her Iron suit.

Despite some solid performances and entertaining banter between Riri and her A.I. Natalie (Lyric Ross), she is rarely a sympathetic character and is quite selfish. I’m not sure why we are meant to root for her as she doesn’t seem to bothered committing crimes just to make money. She never seems interested in helping anyone, so I guess this is something they would explore in later seasons?

I thought Anthony Ramos made for a charismatic villain in The Hood/Parker Robbins and I liked seeing young Han Solo himself Alden Ehrenreich play the son of a character from Iron Man, but you can’t help feeling that this is throwing in MCU names and events to try and connect everything when it doesn’t really capture the spirit of the movies.

I do like the more grounded, street level aspect of the story and there are some decent action scenes which are few and far between; the fights are well choreographed which are really what make the show worth watching.

There are cool musical choices which work in creating the atmosphere although it’s too bad there is no main theme tune for the show.

Overall, Ironheart isn’t as terrible as many reviews are saying, but it’s also not great either; there are some solid fight scenes throughout and I liked Anthony Ramos, Lyric Ross and Alden Ehrenreich. Aside from that the story isn’t all that exciting and Riri herself comes across as arrogant and selfish for the most part making her unsympathetic.
