Fans of the Ocean’s series, which originally began in 1960 but was remade with the George Clooney-led cast in 2001, may be getting an addition to the series. According to reports, director David Leitch, responsible for Deadpool 2, Bullet Train, and John Wick, is already discussing directing Ocean’s 14. As usual, the new movie will detail a heist and include Danny Ocean (George Clooney) and Rusty Ryan (Brad Pitt).
Earlier reports stated that Edward Berger (All Quiet on the Western Front, Conclave) was initially slated to direct. However, discussions fell through, and the role has now passed to Leitch, who is reportedly considering details.
The Ocean’s series follows Danny and his team of skilled criminals as they execute challenging high-stakes heists against rich and powerful targets. For instance, Ocean’s Eleven targeted three Las Vegas casinos, all owned by Terry Benedict.
The series is another casino-themed movie that mirrors the excitement of gambling with the twist of a heist. It seems that this sequel might come at a perfect time, as the gambling industry has been registering more and more players on a global level. The tech advancements and the fast development of feature-rich iGaming platforms like Mega Dice have made these motifs more relevant. The main difference is that most such digital platforms are so well-protected that a heist, i.e., data theft is hard to carry out (although not completely impossible). Anyway, all these factors can help players connect better with Ocean’s and other related movies.
So far, the movies in the Ocean’s series are as follows:
- Ocean’s 11 (1960): The very first one, Ocean’s 11, follows the same premise, with Danny Ocean planning to rob several Las Vegas casinos. The movie included members of the Rat Pack, including Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Peter Lawford, and Joey Bishop. According to reports, Marilyn Monroe was initially considered for a role but was not selected.
- Ocean’s Eleven (2001): Danny and his gang plan a heist to steal from three casinos as he tries to get Tess (Julia Roberts), his ex-wife, back.
- Ocean’s Twelve (2004): After they were forced to repay the loot from the previous heist, Danny and his team travel around Europe to stage multiple heists.
- Ocean’s Thirteen (2007): The revenge-themed movie saw Danny try to steal from a casino mogul by rigging his new resort in Vegas. Ocean’s Eleven, Twelve, and Thirteen, were all directed by Steven Soderbergh.
- Ocean’s 8 (2018): This is a spin-off with an all-female team of thieves trying to execute a heist at the Met Gala. The team was led by Danny’s sister Debbie (Sandra Bullock), and a team that included thieves played by Anne Hathaway, Rihanna, and others.
The Ocean’s Prequel
In addition to Ocean’s 14, there are ongoing talks about a prequel. The untitled movie is expected to feature Ryan Gosling and Margot Robbie as Danny’s parents. However, there are no immediate plans for filming, as confirmed by Robbie, who is the producer. In an interview conducted early last year, Robbie admits there is still a lot to figure out about the movie, which will affect production timing. She said:
“Well, that’s still in development. Word got out about that; we didn’t release anything because it’s way too soon, to be honest. Whether it winds up being the next thing, I don’t know. I don’t think so. It’s a pretty big project to put together and there are certain logistical things that we have to time it around.”
Reports also indicate talks of a potential crossover sequel with the Magic Mike story. In 2023, Soderbergh and Clooney mentioned this crossover while speaking at the Toronto International Film Festival. Although the conversation sounded like a joke, they both agreed that they had had several discussions about sequels.
A Leitch-Led Ocean’s Sequel
Leitch was responsible for the 2024 Action/Comedy The Fall Guy, starring Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt. Among other things, Leitch is respected for his way of adding some comedy to an otherwise serious story, a skill that could benefit Ocean’s Fourteen. This skill could also be critical, especially if the upcoming sequel is the last in the Ocean’s series.
In a 2023 interview with Uproxx, Clooney hinted at Ocean’s Fourteen, saying there was a “really good script” for a new Ocean’s. In addition to confirming the “great script,” Clooney said the idea for the movie is like Going In Style, the movie about a few retirees who planned a heist. If Clooney’s hint is anything to go by, Leitch must create a strong and memorable outing for the Ocean’s series as the Danny Ocean character retires.
Interestingly, Ocean’s 8 killed Danny off-screen, with fans wondering whether or not the death was real. For some, Danny’s death is just another con typical of the skilled thief. In the movie, Debbie visits Danny’s grave a few times. However, the film reflects the possibility that Danny is alive, as Debbie seems to doubt. This leaves the fact of his death open-ended, giving producers room to keep him alive if they so desire.
Conclusion – What to Expect From Ocean’s 14
The idea of a sequel suggests that Danny’s death is not real. However, there is no official confirmation. Clooney reprising his role indicates that Danny will be alive in the new movie. Since Ocean’s 14 is not a prequel, fans believe he isn’t really dead, and the most likely scenario is that he was faking.
Either way, the movie is expected to somewhat address Ocean’s 8, and explain why there is a Danny Ocean grave, plus a story about why he may have faked his death. The movie should also clarify whether or not Debbie knew it was fake and if her visits to the grave were part of a long con.
Apart from the above, there is not much information about the sequel and what the story will cover. Nonetheless, fans worldwide are eagerly waiting for the return of Danny Ocean after nearly two decades since Ocean’s Thirteen.
