Plot: A Los Angeles helicopter pilot (Anna Nicole Smith) finds herself caught in a hostage drama atop an 86-story building.
My friend Jon Cross hosts a Podcast called The PM Entertainment Podcast where he discusses the extensive library of movies made by PM Entertainment (funnily enough). It go me thinking that I had actually never watched the cinematic gold that was Skyscraper starring Anna Nicole Smith from 1996, so I decided it was finally time to bite the bullet.
In this movie Smith plays helicopter pilot Carrie Wink whose charter soon turns deadly when she finds that she is on a building held by terrorists. It is up to Carrie and her husband Gordon (Richard Steinmetz) to save the hostages.
It only takes 10 minutes before a gratuitous shower scene occurs followed by an awkward and overlong love scene. There is a flashback love scene later on as well just in case you needed more nudity which of course we did. One scene which jarred was the rape scene which felt out of place in a silly film like this and it was also made to look sexy which was just weird.
The acting is shockingly bad at times, but really, what was I expecting? On the plus side there is actually some decent action with shoot-outs and fight scenes with some impressive stunts too. The movie is clearly a riff on Die Hard with one scene totally lifted with Carrie swinging into a window then being pulled out by the cable.
Calvin Levels seems to be enjoying himself as the villain Nakim who can’t stop quoting Shakespeare. He’s clearly channeling Hans Gruber but he’s not anywhere near as iconic a villain.
The script is incredible featuring dialogue like “Well, excuse me for still believing in Sunday walks in the park, and little babies!” And the Oscar goes to….
Overall, Skyscraper is entertaining for all the wrong reasons and is just a poor man’s Die Hard with more boobs. It at least has some action scenes but there is nothing new this brings to the genre.
