M3GAN 2.0 Unrated 4K Blu-ray Review

An Entertaining Upgrade
3.5

Summary

M3GAN 2.0 deserves more love as it’s a lot of fun with plenty of action and bloody kills; I think it will develop a following over time and the Unrated version is the definitive cut. There aren’t a ton of special features, but there’s enough to entertain and the film itself is worth picking up as the picture and sound are faultless.

Plot: The original creative team, including producer James Wan for Atomic Monster, Jason Blum for Blumhouse, and director Gerard Johnstone, reunites to reboot M3GAN for a new mission. When an autonomous android engineered to be the ultimate weapon threatens M3GAN’s beloved Cady, M3GAN convinces her creator, Gemma, to give her a glow-up that makes the original A.I. diva even deadlier. Armed with wild new upgrades and her same iconic attitude, M3GAN claps back against the wannabe techno-terror in a fierce faceoff to crown the baddest bot built for maximum mayhem.

Allison Williams (Get Out, “Girls”) reprises her role as M3GAN’s creator, joined by returning cast members Violet McGraw (“The Haunting of Hill House”), Amie Donald, and Jenna Davis. The film welcomes new talents including Ivanna Sakhno (Ahsoka, Pacific Rim: Uprising), Aristotle Athari (Saturday Night Live, “Hacks”), Timm Sharp (“Apples Never Fall”, “Percy Jackson and the Olympians”) and Grammy winner and 11-time Emmy nominee Jemaine Clement (Avatar: The Way of Water, What We Do in the Shadows).

Review: I know what you’re thinking, “Why are you reviewing this movie? Isn’t it horror?” Where the first M3GAN was (sorta) horror. like The Terminator, M3GAN 2.0 changes genres and goes purely for action.

Audiences didn’t approve and this quickly died at the theatre, but they missed out as this is hugely entertaining and could eventually become a cult classic.

There are regular references to Steven Seagal, the young girl Cady has a poster for John Carpenter’s The Thing in her room and there is a ton of action. We get fight scenes, shoot-outs and gory kills as well as a cautionary note about the dangers of A.I.

I thought the first Megan was fun but forgettable, however, I think this sequel is a vast improvement. It has a couple of twists, and I love how we’re now rooting for the “villain” the way we did with Arnie in T2. It’s hard not to compare the two movies as they have similar themes and judging by the way we’re going tech wise, we haven’t learned anything since then.

In terms of flaws, even in the first movie I never really took to Gemma and in this one she still isn’t especially sympathetic, but by the end I was finally on her side. I also could have done without the Kate Bush song which was brief but still excruciating.

The unrated version has more blood and some decent kills, and the picture and sound are faultless. In terms of special features, we get the following:

  • UNRATED VERSION – Upgraded with enhanced kills, deleted scenes and more blood & carnage, see the unrated version that was too gruesome for theaters!
  • HDR PRESENTATION OF THE FILM
  • DOLBY ATMOS AUDIO TRACK
  • Total Upgrade: Making M3GAN 2.0 – Equipped with some killer upgrades, the team that unleashed M3GAN returns. Cast and crew take you through the artistry and craftsmanship that went into building a bigger, badder, and bloodier sequel.
  • Droid DNA – Unveil M3GAN 2.0 as she prepares to tackle rogue military asset Amelia. Go behind the scenes and see the puppetry, technology, and animatronics that brought these deadly droids to life.
  • The Art of Slaying – The cast and stunt team discuss creating and executing the film’s most explosive and gruesome action sequences. Special effects and prop teams go into the gory details that make up the guts of the film.
  • Scene Breakdown: Embrace AI Convention – From a dance battle to a blood fest, this breakdown will show how each department worked together to create this epic and deadly sequence.
  • Optional English SDH, Spanish, and French subtitles for the main feature

There are only 3 featurettes, but it’s still enough to keep you entertained, and the Unrated version of the film alone makes this worth picking up.

Overall, M3GAN 2.0 feels like a love letter to classic action with references to Steven Seagal as well as plenty of fight scenes and gory moments. It’s a definite upgrade from the fun but forgettable first movie and this 4K is worth adding to the collection.
