Plot: A Chinese spy delivers a shipment of guns to Mongolia and encounters scores of hostels.

Review: Hong Kong superstar Michelle Yeoh (who would later star in Supercop and Tomorrow Never Dies) plays a scrappy adventurer named Fok Ming-Ming, who is on a mission to rescue a Chinese Spy from the Japanese army in 1938. She’s a full-time mercenary and a part time aviatrix, and her skills in martial arts are unparalleled. In the first great scene of the movie, she’s delivering a shipment of guns to a small, enclosed village somewhere near Mongolia, and when the entire village turns against her, she uses a whip and a Gatling gun to push the waves of assailants away, while still managing a grand escape. This movie’s full of great, cinematic fights and explosive thrills.

Old fashioned and exciting, Magnificent Warriors is a blast. Anyone can see that star Yeoh (real name Yang Zi Chong) is someone to watch out for. Her athleticism is astonishing, and her skills as a fighter are amazing. She looks great in action, and this is one of her standout movies. Fans of contemporary Hong Kong martial arts action movies should seek it out. If you’re not already a fan of Yeoh, this movie might make you one. Directed by David Chung.
