The Most Unique Action Movie of the Year!
Summary
Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice has humour and heart with plenty of action especially the finale which feels like a tribute to John Woo.
Plot: Two friends navigate the dangerous world of organized crime, testing their loyalty and survival skills as they get deeper into the criminal underworld.
Review: Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice may not sound like the title of an action movie, but this is easily this most unique action picture of the year with a story that’s crazy, but original. I like when Vince Vaughn does something different like Brawl in Cell Block 99 and although this still has a sense of humour, it also has heart. It isn’t as hardcore as Brawl but it has some impressive action including well choreographed fight scenes and shoot-outs as well as paying homage to John Woo. It also features an awesome cameo but I’ll say no more than that.
Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice is funny with a solid if not remarkable script; there are a few dick jokes which I grew out of when I was like 13 but it still has several funny moments. James Mrsden shines here showing off his comedic chops where he has most of the funny lines with Vaughn playing more the the straight man… or should I say men?
It’s an out there story, but it’s something different and not a remake or sequel so it’s worth checking out. It also has Lewis Tan who is criminally underused and doesn’t get any action scenes which feels like a missed opportunity. Keith David makes any movie better and I also enjoyed the running gag about The Gilmore Girls. I feel like I’m missing out that I haven’t watch it…
The music is perfect with come choice old-school choices with Oasis used to moving effect.
It got me thinking that with today’s technology it would be cool to get a sequel to Double Impact. We all know we want it!
Overall, Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice is a fresh twist on the action genre with some impressive action as well as heart and humour. The bullet riddled finale is awesome, but it’s a shame the great Lewis Tan doesn’t get more to do.
