Let me tell you a horror story today.
If you enjoy horror stories as much as I do, please continue reading.
Obviously, this story is not real, but there is actually something very real that, just like the creature of my story, sleeps under the earth in your garden, and might appear on the surface when spring arrives just to cause trouble.
Oh, you don’t believe me? Don’t roll your eyes too early.
Let me share with you this horror piece, and then I will tell you why moles are a menace to your garden and explain how to protect your property from moles this winter.
A Mole Horror Story
Scratches.
I’ve been hearing them for months.
At first, I thought they were just rats. But I haven’t seen rats or signs of them.
Something’s going on.
Scratch, scratch.
Were those sounds just in my mind? I thought I was going crazy.
A Stephen King story came to my mind. It was about that man who heard noises inside the walls, thinking they were rats, only for him to discover it was a giant, ancient worm.
Was it possible that some kind of Lovecraftian giant monster was haunting my house?
It was hard to believe.
Bugs disappeared too. Flowers died. The grass turned gray.
One could think those were the signals of winter approaching.
But actually, during winter, the sounds diminished.
I spent the whole winter on alert, in silence, listening carefully.
And when I thought it was the end, the snow started to melt, and the scratches came back.
Scratch, scratch, scratch.
And then, the holes appeared.
I accidentally stepped on one of those little hills while walking in the garden.
It was the entrance to The Tunnels.
The holes in the ground and the hills.
In my garden, on the neighbors’ properties, out in the streets.
I don’t know if I’m glad that it was not me going crazy, or if I’m actually terrified.
Because now we all know the menace is real.
You can even see the earth trails going up where the Tunnels are.
You can even hear them burrowing under the floor, below basements.
Deeper and deeper.
Them. How to call them? Other than…
Demons.
Subterranean demons.
What else could they be?
Hiding in the ground, coming straight from the depths of Hell, using their claws to dig.
It seemed that they went down to Hell during winter, and now, with warmer temperatures, they are coming back to the surface.
I know they are under the earth, waiting silently.
Just one step in the wrong place and the earth will collapse.
And you’ll fall through the Tunnels, and into that endless void.
Forever.
What’s the Problem with Moles?
Ok, let’s turn on the lights.
What a story, huh?
Yeah, moles have nothing diabolical, except for some true facts that you can recover from the story:
- Moles do kill your flowers and grass when digging, by breaking root systems.
- They can also damage irrigation systems.
- You, your children, or senior residents can actually fall down when accidentally stepping on molehills.
- Molehills are definitely not a nice decoration for your garden.
Basically, moles do not come from Hell or the like, but they will destroy your garden if you do not keep them away before winter.
Why winter?
Moles do not hibernate, but during cold months, they dig deeper into the earth, so you won’t see them or their molehills until warmer temperatures arrive.
By spring, your mole problem can turn into an infestation.
Tips to Avoid Moles in Your Garden
To keep moles away from your garden during winter, follow these tips:
- Watch Out for Other Pests: Moles eat bugs such as earthworms and grubs. If they find food in your garden, they will stay there. Check for pest problems to avoid attracting moles.
- Reduce Water Use: When you overwater, the soil becomes loose, and it’s perfect for moles to dig through. Water less frequently in winter to avoid bugs and moles.
- Set Up Barriers: Putting up physical barriers is also an option to protect your flowers and trees. Put clothes liners, or place wire mesh, to avoid moles from digging into specific places.
- Leave it to Predators: Snakes, birds of prey, and even cats are great options to deter moles from your garden. Easy peasy.
