A Superior Sequel
Summary
Nobody 2 surpassed my expectations which were already high, but when you have talent like Timo Tjahjanto behind the camera then you know there will be carnage and this has it in spades while still having a sense of fun. I may just got see this another couple of times on the big screen as it’s an absolute blast.
Plot: Workaholic assassin Hutch Mansell takes his family on a much-needed vacation to the small tourist town of Plummerville. However, he soon finds himself in the crosshairs of a corrupt theme-park operator, a shady sheriff, and a bloodthirsty crime boss.
Review: Nobody is one of my favourite recent action movies with Bob Odenkirk proving he had the chops to be an action hero. The movie also had an amazing supporting cast including Christopher Lloyd and Connie Nielsen. The gang is all here for the sequel which has been one of my most anticipated action movies of this year, but does it live up to the first?
I’m pleased to say that for me at least, not only does Nobody 2 live up to the first movie but it surpasses it in nearly every way.
Directed by Timo Tjahjanto (The Night Comes for Us), Nobody 2 delivers everything I wanted from it and more. I had a stupid grin on my face throughout as the film is packed with imaginative fight scenes and bloody kills while also being funny as Hell.
Bob Odenkirk once again shines as Hutch Mansell who seems to be a complete shit magnet even when he tries to go on vacation. I found myself cheering along with him especially the scene where the arcade owner slaps Hutch’s daughter; you know that won’t end well…
Colin Hanks is arguably even more of a diverse actor than his father as he’s really good at playing villains which we rarely got to see Tom Hanks do. Colin can look really mean and he’s a hateful bastard in this too.
It’s nice to see Connie Nielsen in a sizable role and and get a piece of the action too while Christopher Lloyd also lights up the screen as always.
This being an 87 North film then obviously Daniel Bernhardt shows up as a henchman and his final showdown with The RZA (who possibly deserves his own spinoff) is one of the many highlights. The main villain this time is played by Sharon Stone who chews the scenery and is one of the year’s best antagonists; she’s an absolute psychopath hamming it up and she was clearly having a ball.
The fact this movie is only 89 minutes means there isn’t a single moment of wasted screentime giving us fights every few minutes and the climax is pure action movie nirvana.
Overall, maybe this caught me in the right mood, but I loved Nobody 2 and it’s one of the year’s best action movies. It’s violent, packed with action and has some laughs too. Bring on part 3 as I just love the character of Hutch and his family and want to see more from them in the future.
