Plot: Set in in a futuristic Las Vegas, a scientist brings three virtual reality characters, two from a cybersex site and the other a villain into the real world. He must pursue the villainous VR character and relate to one of the cyber vixens.
Don Wilson stars in this very 90’s yet still hugely enjoyable sci-fi actioner Grid Runners AKA Virtual Combat where het gets to face off against Michael Bernardo and Loren Avedon who play the main villains. This has a crazy plot which is very much of the time period but remember when Cybersex was a thing? That plays a part as David Quarry (Wilson) battles his enemy from a virtual game in the real world.
There is plenty of gratuitous nudity in-between the fight scenes and it doesn’t take long for David to bed Athena Massey’s Liana.
At a blissful 87 minutes long Grid Runners is well paced, and Wilson always looks the part in the fight scenes.
There is some unintentional mirth in Michael Dorn’s voiceover for Dante as it just feels weird to see Michael Bernardo’s mouth moving but not saying the actual words. I know it’s because he’s a videogame character brought to life, but it hasn’t aged too well in that respect. What I do still enjoy is the cool lighting when David is in the game and it’s all smoky visuals and neon lights which still hold up.
The highlight is seeing Loren Avedon on villain duties and even though he is essentially the henchman, he still was awesome. I would love to see him in more modern action movies as he’s still young enough to kick ass on screen.
Overall, Grid Runners is that easy to watch 90’s martial arts filled action movie that took up many a Saturday night of my growing up. Don Wilson rocks and I love seeing Loren Avedon as a villain; there are fight scenes every few minutes as well as nudity so really, what’s not to love?
