A Sweeping Action Epic
Summary
Revolver Lily may be a bit too long however, I love Yuri Ozone as a character and there are enough fights, shoot-outs and graphic kills to make this worth checking out.
Plot: Once upon a time, Yuri was one of Japan’s deadliest assassins, but she’s retired now and spends her days running an underground brothel. A news report about a former colleague who has died under mysterious circumstances doesn’t quite sit right. The dead man’s son is now the target of a military manhunt, and Yuri will do whatever it takes to keep him safe.
Review: After watching all of Revolver Lily I’m still left wondering… who the Hell is Lily? There is no one called Lily in this movie! Our main protagonist is called Yuri Ozone (awesome name) and is played by Haruka Ayase, but the title doesn’t really make much sense aside from she uses a revolver, so I guess it’s a translation issue.
Set in 1924 the story is about an ex-spy called Yuri, a former assassin, along with an orphan possessing intel about missing imperial Japanese army funds who are pursued by soldiers as they seek the money while trying to survive. It starts off intense and violent with a real sense of threat however, it does tend to become mildly less exciting as it goes on.
It still has plenty of action with nicely choreographed fight scenes, some awesome shoot-outs and graphic kills. It does plod a little at times, but despite some rather negative reviews on IMDb I still thought this was a gorgeous looking epic.
Haruka Ayase shines as our badass lead Yuri who is an almost invincible superhero able to take on multiple opponents at a time with ease. I think one of the action highlights for me is the shoot-out in the fog which was nicely done and incredibly stylish.
There are several villains in the mix who are all suitably hateful and get what they deserve by the end, so it’s a satisfying watch and is even open for a potential sequel. I don’t think it warrants one as it was quite long enough and I doubt I’d sit through it again despite it being an entertaining watch.
Overall, Revolver Lily is overlong but it has some stunning visuals and action scenes to make it worth a one time watch.
