Summary
The Detonator is your typical 2000’s forgettable action movie that’s filmed in Eastern Europe. Wesley Snipes sounds dubbed at times and the story is generic stuff, but there are at least a few decent action scenes.
Plot: Sonni Griffith, a top US Secret Agent must protect a witness as he crosses Europe.
Review: Wesley Snipes stars in this straight to video film which has the same production values as Steven Seagal movies of the era; it sounds like Snipes is actually dubbed a few times and it’s noticeable too which took me out of the movie. It’s a shame as otherwise it’s an enjoyable enough tale with several explosions, fight scenes and a chase.
Snipes plays Sonni Griffith, a cop who is in Eastern Europe investigating weapons dealers and he ends up having to protect a woman called Nadia Cominski (played by Silvia Colloca) who is being chased by Josef Bostanescu (Tim Duttom) and his goons. Sonni doesn’t know who he can trust and ends up on the run while trying to keep Nadia safe. It’s generic stuff and really quite forgettable, but like I said it does at least have a few fun action scenes.
For some reason we keep getting flashbacks which mean nothing and are never explored in any great detail; all they do is pad the movie out, making it mildly longer than it needs to be.
William Hope (Gorman from Aliens) plays Snipes’ ally, Michael Shepard who may or may not have his own motives and he is one of the best aspects of the movie. Despite the subpar quality of this film, he never phones it in and is one of the movie’s highlights.
I love how in the opening scene Snipes pretends to be this camp arms dealer which I feel like he improvised and added some humour to things as he maybe knew this wasn’t going to be a great film.
It’s predictable stuff and even after watching the movie literally last night I’m struggling to remember what happened in it.
Overall, The Detonator is one of Wesley Snipes weaker films and he deserved so much better; it has a few enjoyable action scenes but nothing that is especially memorable. A one time watch at best.
