Venom: The Last Dance (2024) Review

Summary

Venom: The Last Dance is arguably my least favourite movie this year; I understand I’m not the target audience for it, so if you enjoyed it then I’m glad but I found it boring, unfunny and just plain dumb. It has the odd cool action sequence, especially the finale, but aside from that it’s forgettable nonsense. The fact we had 3 movies without Venom and Spider-Man together feels like such a waste and missed opportunity.

Plot: Eddie Brock and Venom must make a devastating decision as they’re pursued by a mysterious military man and alien monsters from Venom’s home world.

Review: I never bothered seeing Venom: The Last Dance in theatres as the trailers looked painfully bad. I’m glad I didn’t waste my money as the movie was indeed mostly terrible and maybe the worst film I’ve seen this year.

I had to force myself to make it to the end as it was slow, uninteresting and just plain stupid. It has nothing to do with Venom from the comics and having the character in 3 movies without ever coming face to face with Spider-Man was a ridiculous idea.

I’ve heard many people say this was the best of the trilogy, but I found it the weakest; there is an overlong road trip sequence which killed the pacing and then after that we get to witness the Lethal Protector dance with Mrs. Chen. Just what we always wanted to see…

In terms of action there was a cool sequence with the always reliable Chiwetel Ejiofor leading his men in a helicopter chasing after Venom as Eddie and the symbiote try to escape. The finale was also decent with the symbiotes working together to stop Knull’s creatures from killing Venom and Eddie. The problem is we never really get to see Knull until the mid-credits scene, so there’s no real villain to hate; just CG creatures making it utterly forgettable.

It’s also confusing seeing Rhys Ifans in this movie; isn’t he The Lizard? Was that another universe? Oh wait, who gives a shit? I’m so glad to see the end of the Sony Spider-verse as they had no idea what they were doing with it and it’s infuriating to see so many great characters wasted in awful movies.

I think the problem is I’m 46 years old and movies like this are not made for me, so I’m not the target demographic. This is aimed at a younger audience, and I think they will enjoy the silliness and there are admittedly a few laughs and some heart.

Overall, Venom: The Last Dance was even worse than expected with only a few entertaining action scenes but everything outside of what was just dull. Hopefully Sony will lose the rights to these characters so Marvel can get them back and do justice to Venom, Kraven and any other character they’ve ruined.
