Clash of the Titans (2010) was a huge hit at the box office. It netted nearly half a billion dollars across the world, with a budget of $125 million. Wrath of the Titans, directed by Jonathan Liebesman however, only grossed $301 million. As a result of this, plans for a third installment were scrapped.
The Time Will Come
According to Basil Iwanyk, who produced the John Wick movies, Clash of the Titans 3 will happen when the time is right. Right now, there’s a huge amount of interest in mythology, with Netflix releasing their new Kaos TV show, which stars Jeff Goldblum and Janet McTeer. A number of games also touch on the mythical theme, with gods from the Clash of the Titans movie also making an appearance in them. In the Age of the Gods game, which can be found here: https://casino.betfair.com/game/age-of-the-gods-cptn, you’ll see a common theme of Zeus, Hades, Poseidon and Athena. This game in particular also has the Pantheon of Power feature, which stems from the Greek words ‘Pan’- meaning all, and theos, meaning ‘God’. In the movie, pantheons refer to the temples of the gods, showing how universal the mythical theme is in terms of modern media.
Even though fans do want a third installment for the movie, the storyline for the second, which you can find here: https://clash-of-the-titans.fandom.com/wiki/Wrath_of_the_Titans, wasn’t as strong as fans hoped it would be.
That doesn’t mean that a third movie won’t ever happen, it just means that right now, it’s not likely. This is especially the case when you consider the sheer amount of competition within the genre right now.
Some people are also saying that Revenge of the Titans entered a holding pattern because Iwanyk was producing Gods of Egypt, which is celebrity-filled and also touched on divine beliefs. This again, contributes to the amount of competition Clash of the Titans 3 would be up against should it ever enter production. A list of mythical movies, which can be found here: https://www.imdb.com/list/ls062932267/, shows just how many have been released so far.
There Isn’t A Strong Market
Numerous directors have since expressed their interest in doing the movie, and there are certainly a lot of actors to choose from who would perfectly fit the role. With that being said, another flop at the box office would certainly be devastating to the series. When you consider the fact that Clash of the Titans 3 was originally in development, with the movie called Revenge of the Titans, it’s certainly going to be hard to resurrect unless there is a significant change within the media market. David Leslie Johnson and Dan Mazeau were called upon to write the movie while the second was in post-production, but the movie was scrapped due to the second movie not performing as expected.
Overall, Clash of the Titans 3 could happen, but it’s not likely. The sheer amount of competition and the box office flop of the second movie are all huge obstacles that need to be dealt with first.
