Akira (1988) Review

Summary

Akira has plenty of action and graphic violence, but I think it requires several watches to fully grasp what’s going on especially towards the end where it becomes incredibly bizarre.

Plot: A secret military project endangers Neo-Tokyo when it turns a teenage biker gang member into a rampaging psychic psychopath who can only be stopped by his best friend.

Review: Akira is a movie that I had never seen before until very recently when I just blind bought the 4K. I’ve never really been into Anime, but this is such an iconic film that I’ve always been curious about it.

It certainly has plenty of action and is filled with cyberpunk visuals and graphic violence. This is also incredibly strange and I have to be honest I lost the plot towards the end and had no idea what was going on. Did Tetsuo (Nozomu Sasaki) basically become one with the Force and help to create a new universe? I have no idea, but it was still cool and Kaneda’s (Mitsuo Iwata) bike is awesome.

I remember there was talk about doing an English language remake, but thankfully that never came to pass. Not everything needs to be remade; just leave it as the wonderfully weird film that it is.

The 4K looks and sounds great and the music is awesome so this is the definitive version to own.

Overall, Akira deserves all the accolades however, I think it requires several viewings to understand fully what is happening, but it has plenty of action and violent kills with sumptuous cyberpunk visuals to definitely be worth checking out.
