An Entertaining Survival Action Thriller
Summary
Apex is elevated by the performances of the two leads and there are some impressive stunts. There isn’t much in the way of action aside from a few desperate fights between Sasha and Ben but it’s still an easy watch for 90 minutes.
Plot: When an adrenaline junkie sets out to conquer a menacing river, she discovers that nature isn’t the only thing out for blood.
Review: I do enjoy survival action thrillers and Apex looked like a tense ride from the trailers. There isn’t much to it in terms of story, but there’s enough to keep you entertained for the 90 minute runtime.
Charlize Theron plays Sasha, a thrill seeker who endures a personal tragedy, so a few months later she decides it’s a great idea to go into the Australian wilderness by herself. What could possibly go wrong? Well, in this case she starts getting hunted by local loon Ben, played by a pitch perfect Taron Egerton. He really is an excellent actor and can just disappear into any role. He owns this movie however, that’s not to take away from Charlize whose broken Sasha is stubborn and not especially sympathetic at first, but we still root for her as she has a battle of wits with Ben.
Charlize tends to do the majority of her own stunts for her movies which is impressive and Apex is no different. There are some thrilling set-pieces like her character, Sasha in the rapids which looks like it was actually her doing it. In terms of action it’s mostly impressive stunts and battling nature as well as a few fights between Sasha and Ben, but nothing crazy.
Ben could easily have been a cartoonish villain but he’s just on the right side of it due to Egerton’s skillful performance.
Overall, Apex has a few thrilling scenes and Charlize never fails to impress when it comes to stunts; Taron Egerton steals the show as the crazed Ben but as with most streaming movies I wouldn’t be in a huge rush to watch it again once you know how it ends.
