Toronto will once again become a mecca for pop-culture fans this weekend as FAN EXPO Canada takes over the Metro Toronto Convention Centre from August 27 to 30. The four-day event brings together fans of comics, movies, television, anime, gaming and cosplay, with celebrity appearances, panels, collectibles and plenty of opportunities to meet fellow enthusiasts. Now one of the country’s biggest pop-culture conventions, Fan Expo has grown far beyond its comic-book roots into a massive celebration of fandom.
This year’s celebrity lineup is particularly impressive. Mark Hamill, best known as Luke Skywalker in Star Wars, is making a rare appearance at the convention, while John Cena will be there on Sunday. Other major guests include Reacher star Alan Ritchson, The A-Team and Rocky III icon Mr. T, and actor Mel Gibson. Fans of television will also have plenty to look forward to, with Breaking Bad star Dean Norris and The Boys actor Erin Moriarty among the guests.
One of the biggest attractions is likely to be the 25th-anniversary celebration of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. Elijah Wood, Sean Astin, Dominic Monaghan and Billy Boyd—the actors who played Frodo, Sam, Merry and Pippin—are reuniting in Toronto for a series of special events. The convention is also bringing together cast members from The Goonies and Starship Troopers, while Iron Maiden frontman Bruce Dickinson is scheduled for a special one-day appearance on Friday.
Beyond the star power, the appeal of Fan Expo is the atmosphere itself. Cosplayers, artists, comic creators, gamers and collectors fill the convention centre, making the event as much about the fans as the celebrities. With celebrity Q&As, autograph sessions, photo opportunities and a huge exhibition floor, there is something for virtually every corner of the pop-culture world. For Toronto fans, this weekend’s event should be one of the city’s biggest celebrations of fandom of the year.
