Jeff Wincott is the Last Man Standing (1995)

Plot: A Los Angeles police officer uncovers a ring of corrupt cops while investigating his partner’s death. Now, he and his wife are hunted by both sides of the law.

Jeff Wincott stars in this 90’s PM Entertainment action thriller about a cop who discovers corruption in his own force and finds out that the only person he can trust is himself.

It does lack the martial arts action of his other movies but it still has some excellent action scenes, including a great car chase midway through with Wincott fighting the villainous Snake Underwood on a stolen Security Truck.

That wasn’t a typo; the villain is called Snake Underwood. That already gets the movie an extra point because it’s such an obvious qnd amazing villain name. He’s a bit of a bastard too and a bully who likes to point guns at people just to watch them squirm.

There are some outstanding stunts and the action is genuinely thrilling, especially considering the movie doesn’t have a huge budget. The movie is directed by Joseph Merhi so it shouldn’t be a surprise that it’s awesome.

Wincott kicks plenty of ass as always and I don’t think I’ve ever seen a movie character smoke so much; after he has the climactic fight with one of the villains he immediately lights up a cigarette, because sweet nicotine eases the pain.

There is however, NO excuse for his wardrobe in this movie; at one point he is wearing a yellow blazer! What man wears a yellow blazer? I don’t care if it’s the 80’s or 90’s, there was never a good era for yellow blazers!

Anyway, Steve Eastin is Lt. Darnell Seagrove, one of the corrupt cops and you may remember him from such films as Con Air. It was good to see him have a larger role in this movie as he’s a decent bad guy. His death is incredibly satisfying; he gets thrown on train tracks, electrocuted and then hit by a train. Needless to say he would not be in a sequel.

You’ve also got a young Robert LaSardo (with hair!) as a henchman and it actually took me a moment to recognize him. He’s always a great villain because of his fierce countenance.

I liked the music score too; it had a memorable theme tune and sounded a bit more expensive than the usual DTV fare of that era.

I like stories about corrupt cops, as I’ve said before; it always seems to have extra tension and the movie also is well paced.

There’s loads of nudity in the movie as well; remember when movies had nudity in them? It has a hilariously overlong sex scene as well.

Overall, Last Man Standing is hugely entertaining with Wincott on great form; it’s just a shame about his wardrobe and the lack of martial arts fight scenes.
