Plot: A wealthy playboy hires a female detective, turned bodyguard, to protect him from a psychotic seductress; the same woman who killed the detective’s lover just months before.
I think Guardian Angel AKA Beyond Justice (another PM Entertainment gem) is one of Cynthia Rothrock’s best movies; it is packed with fight scenes and has an awesome finale featuring a speedboat chase. It seems to have a bigger budget than a lot of Rothrock’s earlier fare, so it has decent production values.
Cynthia plays detective McKay who quits after a psychotic criminal executes her fiancé (Marshall Teague) in cold blood. Lydie Denier really shines in this movie as the utterly crazed villain, Nina. She didn’t even have to kill McKay’s fiancé but did it just for fun which is just plain mean. Denier is fantastic in the role and it’s great to see a female villain done right.
The script isn’t bad either with a few moments of humour and Daniel McVicar has some nice chemistry with Rothrock as the likeable Hobbs. The supporting cast includes Art Camacho, Robert Miano, Marshall Teague and Ken McLeod as a hateful, sexist cop.
The music score is my favourite kind featuring electric guitars and even an Enigma-esque end credits tune.
Overall, Guardian Angel is probably in my top 5 Cynthia Rothrock movies as it’s that kind of fight-filled 90s action movie that I find so easy to watch.
