Lucky Number Slevin (2006) Review

Verdict
3.5

Summary

Lucky Number Slevin remains a bit of an underrated gem with a great cast who are all clearly enjoying themselves… even Bruce Willis.

Plot: A case of mistaken identity puts a man named Slevin (Josh Hartnett) in the middle of a war between two rival New York crime lords: The Rabbi (Ben Kingsley) and the Boss (Morgan Freeman). While under the watchful eyes of Detective Brikowski (Stanley Tucci) and well-known assassin Goodkat (Bruce Willis), Slevin must quickly devise a plan to save his skin before his luck runs out.

Review: Lucky Number Slevin is certainly one of the better Bruce Willis movies of recent years; it’s got a snappy script, funny dialogue and doesn’t skimp on bloody action sequences too. The cast is excellent including Josh Hartnett, Lucy Liu, Morgan Freeman and Ben Kingsley.

This is probably one of Lucy Liu’s most appealing roles and I totally fell in love with her character; she was just the right amount of quirky and had real likability too.

I’ve always been a fan of Josh Hartnett as he has a certain swagger and arrogance on screen which really works well for this movie; he gets beaten up throughout this movie and he kinda deserves it for being such a smart ass all the time time but b the end it all makes sense.

It feels fresh and incredibly well paced, keeping you guessing until the incredibly satisfying finale. The only problem is once you’ve watched it once then it loses a little bit of luster as it’s all about the payoff so it maybe lacks the re-watchability factor.

Bruce Willis doesn’t say that much but I really loved his assassin character and would be intrigued to see a spin-off telling his story.

The whole movie is just cool as ice and with villains played by Freeman and Kingsley you know you’re in for a good time.

Overall, despite losing something after you’ve watched it once, Lucky Number Slevin remains a bit of an underrated gem with a great cast who are all clearly enjoying themselves… even Bruce Willis.
