Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Pilot (2013) Review

Plot: The first episode features the return of Agent Coulson as he puts together a rag-tag team of nerds to join the ranks of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Review: Hmm, well this didn’t exactly blow my skirt up; if you’re expecting something like the Marvel movies you’ll be sorely disappointed. Yes, they do reference the events of The Avengers, but aside from that this is pretty low scale with no really interesting characters.

Now that they have FINALLY explained how Coulson is back, (thus rendering the only emotional scene in The Avengers moot) he puts together a new team of frankly annoying smart asses and caricatures.  You’ve got the Scottish guy and English girl providing “comic” relief but the main girl Skye (Chloe Bennet)  was just a pain in the ass.

Ming Na Wen plays the Asian girl who can fight, which is the standard in most shows; hopefully they develop her a bit more in future episodes.

Agent Ward (Brett Dalton) was quite cool and arguably the most interesting character; he has the best scene in the episode which is a fight in a kitchen with 2 goons; it was surprisingly brutal for a family show.

It looks nice for a TV show but it really lacks the spectacle required to maintain interest, particularly when all you want to see is superheros like Iron Man & co. I’m hoping we at least get Nick Fury in a few episodes, otherwise I’d be surprised if this makes it to Season Two.

So far, Phase Two of Marvel’s grand scheme hasn’t exactly been impressive with this and the lackluster Iron Man 3; I’m hoping Thor can restore my faith.

Overall, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is pretty underwhelming and although I wasn’t expecting The Avengers, it would have been better to have more interesting characters, rather than a bunch of annoying wise-asses. I don’t even know if I’ll tune in next week but Coulson and Agent Ward at least make it entertaining.
