Mechanic: Resurrection (2016) Review

Summary

Mechanic: Resurrection is pretty much everything you’d want it to be with Statham on badass form and a huge bodycount.

Plot: Arthur Bishop thought he had put his murderous past behind him when his most formidable foe kidnaps the love of his life. Now he is forced to travel the globe to complete three impossible assassinations, and do what he does best, make them look like accidents.

Review: Mechanic Resurrection has been on my “most anticipated” list for a long time and I’m happy to report that it didn’t disappoint; in fact I’d go as far as to say that I probably preferred it to the first movie (which I also enjoy). This is an old-school action movie and feels like a perfect throwback to the action nirvana of the 80’s, especially the final 30 minutes which involve Arthur Bishop (Jason Statham) as a one many army.

I love how Arthur is pretty much one step ahead of absolutely everybody all the time and is indestructible; he’s like a John Matrix style character where bullets just dance around him but when he shoots he is always on point.

You’ve also got Jessica Alba who provides the eye candy, even if she doesn’t get to do much else but this is Statham’s show and that’s fine by me.

Tommy Lee Jones only has a small role so if you’re expecting him to be a major character then you may be disappointed and the main villain Crain (Sam Hazeldine) isn’t all that exciting either. Also, why have Michelle Yeoh in your film if she doesn’t get to kick any ass? That was the biggest letdown and felt like a missed opportunity. I was hoping she and Arthur would team up and take on the world in the finale but she was nowhere to be seen.

For the most part the visuals were well done with some imaginative action sequences and minimal noticeable CGI (although there is some); the way Arthur puts his kills together is like a jigsaw and it’s a blast watching him pull it all off.

It’s well paced and I can literally watch The Stath hurting people for hours on end so it’s profoundly satisfying with some awesome bad guy deaths too.

Overall, Mechanic: Resurrection is pretty much everything you’d want it to be with Statham on badass form and a huge bodycount. It’s a shame Michelle Yeoh didn’t get to have any fights and there are a few other niggles but it’s still one of the best action movies of the year.
