Raze (2013) Review

Summary

It’s kind of difficult to recommend a film like this; serial killers and misogynists will have a field day and probably find it a turn on but it didn’t do much for me. Like I said, it’s not badly made, just not my bag.

Plot: Raze, a horror/action film, focuses on two abducted women & 50 other women who are forced to fight each other using their bare hands.

Review: If the intention of this movie was to make the viewer feel physically ill, then job done. I love a violent movie as much as the next sicko but for me this was nothing more than torture porn.

Watching women being beaten to death ain’t my idea of a good time; I literally had to turn away a few times and it takes a lot to shock me. Women, animals and kids I don’t need to see bad things done to, so if you’re easily offended then I would definitely give this a pass.

The violence is incredibly brutal and very real; there are no “cool” fight scenes but we do get some great shots of women having their faces punched until they are dead… lovely.

It’s not a badly made film though; the performances are excellent and Zoë Bell is awesome. She’s the main protagonist and you are rooting for her 100% to escape from this nightmare and punish those responsible.

Well, we do indeed get a satisfying comeuppance but the whole film will leave you with nothing. After 90 minutes of Hell I could have done with an uplifting finale but alas, it never came.

It was great to see Doug Jones and Sherilyn Fenn have bigger roles than we’ve seen them in for a while and they are both suitably creepy too.

The film is a visceral nightmare and has a real sense of dread from beginning to end; it doesn’t let up so you’ll be pretty drained by the end credits.

The music was awesome too; it’s sort of industrial sounding and helps to create this Hellish world.

Overall, it’s kind of difficult to recommend a film like this; serial killers and misogynists will have a field day and probably find it a turn on but it didn’t do much for me. Like I said, it’s not badly made, just not my bag.
