Brutal, Bloody and Never Boring
Reacher: Season 4 delivers another hugely entertaining season packed with brutal beatdowns, memorable villains and some wonderfully creative kills. Fast-paced, ruthless and rarely slowing down for breath, Reacher remains one of the best action shows on television.
Plot: Jack Reacher investigates a deep conspiracy after witnessing a Pentagon employee named Anna Merrick die by suicide on a Philadelphia subway.
Review: We’re four seasons into Reacher and it’s still one of the best action shows on television. This season has Reacher caught up in a deadly conspiracy after witnessing a woman called Anna Merrick take her own life on the subway. This brings him together with Anna’s brother Jacob (Christopher Rodriguez-Marquette) and Detective Tamara Green (Sydelle Noel), who team up to find out what’s really going on.
I’m going to go into spoilers ahead, so you have been warned if you haven’t seen this season yet.
I thought it was a refreshing change to have two main female villains who are every bit as deadly as any opponent Reacher has faced before. Amisha (Anggun) and Lila Hoth (Agnez Mo) are both quite hateful, and the final showdown truly delivers on the action front. I’m still not sure how Reacher survived being slashed and stabbed that many times, but they did mention that his scar saved his life. Anyway, it’s best not to overthink it as it’s just entertainment.
I enjoyed Jacob and Tamara, who are essentially this season’s sidekicks. Jacob wants revenge for the death of his sister, while Tamara has become jaded as a cop after dealing with corruption in the past. They’re some of my favourite supporting characters yet, as they’re sympathetic and genuinely good people who find themselves thrown into a very bad situation.
I’m not going to go into the story any further as there’s a lot going on and plenty of other characters involved, so you’re better just watching it for yourself.
As always, the action is the highlight, with plenty of brutal beatdowns and imaginative kills. A dude gets killed by a door and another with an elevator in particularly creative fashion, which is awesome. We also see Reacher at his most ruthless during one of the season’s most shocking scenes, but he was never exactly a Boy Scout anyway, so it didn’t seem outside the realms of possibility for the character.
Every episode moves at a lightning pace, rarely going more than a few minutes without a fight scene, shoot-out, chase or explosion. There’s very little downtime, making this one of my personal favourite seasons yet.
Overall, Reacher: Season 4 once again delivers the action goods and remains one of the best action shows on television. Season 5 is filming as we speak, and I’m about to watch the first episode of Neagley, so today is a good day to be a Reacher fan.
