Remembering The Hoff as Nick Fury: Agent of SHIELD (1998)

Plot: Agent Nick Fury is asked to fight the menace of Hydra after exiling himself in the Yukon since the end of the Cold War. The children of the former Hydra head, Baron Von Stucker, have taken charge of the terrorist organisation, and under the lead of his vicious daughter, Viper, Hydra has seized a deadly virus and threatens the destruction of America. The covert agency SHIELD brings Fury out of retirement to fight the terrorist.

With the upcoming Avengers: Secret Wars I feel it will be a huge, missed opportunity if David Hasselhoff doesn’t show up in some capacity in the multiverse as Nick Fury.

I think we all remember (and indeed will try to forget) this made for TV movie which was Marvel’s first attempt at an Agents of SHIELD TV show; to be fair, it actually feels familiar and has some of the recognizable names and even the helicarrier that we know but it just lacked the budget to be convincing.

It has some very early CG which hasn’t held up well but some of the performances, especially from the villains, are hilariously bad. That’s part of the entertainment value though and makes it all the more fun.

In the action department there isn’t much to speak of for the first half, but the final half hour has some shoot-outs and fights with a couple of explosions. If we ever got a series it would have been interesting for them to introduce some of The Avengers but I guess we weren’t ready for that yet…

The Hoff is as entertaining as ever chewing the scenery (and cigars) and it’s hard to dislike him and I hope someday we are blessed with a scene with him and Sam Jackson. The most annoying character in film is Director General Jack Pincer (Tom McBeath) who is just there to be a pain in the ass and if we did get a TV series, I hope they would have rewritten the character a little.

Overall, Nick Fury: Agent of SHIELD is very much a product of the 90’s but it has some fun moments mostly due to the over-the-top performances with The Hoff chewing the scenery as only he can. It could have done with more action but the final half hour delivers in that respect but it’s understandable why this potential series didn’t take off.
