Plot: A helicopter cop sets out to foil an elaborately orchestrated crime, but when a team of bank robbers put their sophisticated plan into action by creating a diversion, the cop finds himself going up against them on his own in order to save both the city and his girlfriend.
David Hasselhoff and Kathy Ireland star in this surprisingly entertaining made for TV Die Hard clone. In Gridlock The Hoff plays helicopter pilot and cop Jake Gorsky who tries to stop a group of bank robbers from a daring heist. His lady, Michele (Kathy Ireland) is fed up with Jake’s attitude towards their relationship where his job always seems to come first. She decides it’s time to leave him but wouldn’t you know it? She ends up at the same place as the robbers, so the pair have to work together and save the day.
Despite its made for television status Gridlock has plenty of action with shoot-outs and few fight scenes; the villain known only as Number 1 is played with relish by Miguel Fernandes who is entertainingly deranged. Number 2 is played by Götz Otto who you’ll remember as Stamper from Tomorrow Never Dies.
Double Impact’s Alan Scarfe plays the real big bad of the story and he was always good value as the smug antagonist.
At just under 90 minutes Gridlock is well paced and quite happily lifts various scenes from Die Hard including using a firehose to jump off a rooftop.
There is nothing unique or original about the movie, but if like me you love trashy B movies from the 90’s then you’ll have a good time here.
Overall, Gridlock is hardly amazing action cinema but it is filled with some corny dialogue, fun villains and plenty of action making it entertaining and indeed Hofftastic.
