Plot: Although master thief Max Hopper (Dean Cain) has decided to turn over a new leaf and find honest work, he decides to take on one final job after realizing the fortune that could result from it. Hopper’s mission is to swipe the prototype for a new computer chip, and his plan goes well until an arsonist sets fire to the building, forcing him to take heroic measures to prevent the deaths of countless people. As the fire rages, can he save the day — and still nab the chip?
I had never seen Firetrap before, but it popped up on my YouTube feed over the weekend, so I thought I would check it out.
I knew I would enjoy it within the first few minutes as soon as I saw the PM Entertainment logo and it didn’t disappoint. Dean Cain plays a thief called Max Hopper who is charged with recovering a chip for the CIA. While on the job the building catches fire and Max has to use his wits and police officer disguise to not only get the chip but escape the raging inferno.
Throughout the runtime we are meant to wonder who the real villain is… spoiler alert.. it’s Richard Tyson (Kindergarten Cop). I knew it was him as soon as I saw his name in the opening credits. He’s always the bad guy and this is no different. He is good at it though and he gets a decent final showdown with Max on the firey rooftop.
This is a well paced 90 minutes with plenty of explosions and a few fights; it is arguably more of a disaster picture than your usual PM fare, but this is still a fun time.
Lori Petty has a rather thankless role as Lucy; I was hoping she would have been more of a badass, but she is just a normal office worker and it’s a very understated and forgettable character.
Overall, Firetrap isn’t one of PM’s best movies but still manages to be entertaining and there is some decent action and stunts towards the end.
