Revisiting T.N.T. (1997) with Olivier Gruner

Plot: The Tactical Neutralization Team, or T.N.T., is a squad of elite soldiers sent on top-secret, near-suicidal missions around the world. After one of their missions ends in failure, team member Alex decides he’s had enough of the special-op life and calls it quits. His commanding officer, however, doesn’t want the security risk of a former member walking around, so he assigns another member of the team to hunt down Alex and retire him permanently.

With a cast that includes Oliver Gruner, Eric Roberts, Randy Travis, Simon Rhee and Sam Jones, T.N.T. is a bit of a must-see for fans of 90’s action. Olivier Gruner plays our lead Alex, who wants to retire from their top secret operations however, his team have other plans. Their boss Russo (Eric Roberts) sends Alex’s team to silence him permanently.

Alex is now living an idyllic life in a small town where he has a woman and has even befriended the local sheriff (Randy Travis); he has kept his past life secret, but it doesn’t take long for it to catch up to him endangering everything he has.

Not including the end credits, this film is 80 minutes long with several fight scenes including a bar brawl (which includes Kane Hodder AKA Jason Vorhees, trivia fans) and a few beatdowns at the end with Olivier Gruner battling Simon Rhee then having a climactic fight with Miles, (Cyril O’Reilly). I’ve got to hand it to O’Reilly who is especially hateful in this movie playing an irredeemable asshole that gets a satisfying (although utterly ridiculous) death.

Spoilers ahead: Alex and Miles are having their final showdown on a road and we see a truck coming towards them… very… slowly. The driver has plenty of time to stop, but for some reason just honks his horn loudly and then runs over Miles. He then jumps out of his truck seeming surprised. Like, we know you saw the men fighting and you honked your horn at them? Call me old-fashioned, but I would usually slow down if a final battle is happening on the road in front of me.

Anyway, some have said this movie is boring, but they’re no friends of mine as I really had a fun with it; I do feel like Sam Jones is underused and you maybe could have had the odd extra fight scene. Also what happened to the weird guy in the suit who was looking for Alex from the first half of the film? He just disappeared and was never mentioned again. Did I miss something?

Overall, T.N.T. has an awesome cast with Olivier Gruner trying his best to be a good guy, but he can’t help beating up guys who deserve it making this a fun watch with an action packed finale.
