A Fitting Finale
Summary
The final episode of The Boys delivered everything I wanted from it even if the rest of the season wasn’t all that great. It certainly had its moments with Anthony Starr once again stealing the show and there are a few fun action scenes but they definitely left the best for last.
Plot: In the season, the Boys and Billy Butcher, who possesses a virus capable of killing all Supes in the world, join forces one last time to try to end Homelander’s reign, who now threatens to become immortal with the discovery of the first version of Compound V, the V1.
Review: It feels like a long time coming but the most morally bankrupt, satirical superhero series of all time has come to an end… with mixed results.
I’ve mostly really enjoyed The Boys with its pitch dark humour and incredible performance from Anthony Starr who really should be getting every accolade. He has played Homelander to perfection; he’s the most powerful superhero on Earth and by this final season he has decided that he is going to be the new God. Billy Butcher (Karl Urban) and The Boys decide this diabolical c#nt really needs to die, so they devise a plan to stop him once and for all.
This is maybe my least favourite season of the show as a lot of it felt underwhelming and at times dragged out. It was also lacking in memorable action scenes, but thankfully they made up for that in the final episode which I personally thought ended the series perfectly. So many television shows don’t know how to finish, but I thought everything was wrapped up and seeing Homelander finally getting his comeuppance was profoundly satisfying.
There were even a few moving moments and I’m glad no matter how crazy things got the show never lost its heart.
I spoke to Karl Urban about The Boys last year and asked him how he felt about it ending and he said he was pleased; he had fun and made some great friends, but he was happy to be moving on. I feel the same way; I’ve enjoyed the series, but there are only so many dick jokes and gruesome deaths you can hear… and there really were a lot in this series.
Overall, The Boys ended with mostly a bang (while Homelander whimpered) and I thought it was one of the better television finales. Everyone got what they deserved whether it be good or bad and the final fight between Butcher and Homelander was awesome. I’m glad it’s done though now and the cast all did a good job, so now I need to find a new show to watch. Any ideas?
