Forgettable fun
Summary
Thrash is basically an inferior rehash of Crawl except with sharks instead of gators, but it’s still entertaining in a forgettable way mostly due to how bland the characters are.
Plot: Amidst a catastrophic hurricane, a coastal town battles nature’s wrath and an onslaught of sharks. Braving torrential rain, debris, and darkness, they unite to survive the deadly predators and make it through the storm.
Review: There are so many shark movies out these days that it’s hard to tell them apart; Thrash doesn’t add anything new to the genre either and feels too similar to Crawl which featured gators in a hurricane whereas this has sharks. The characters are all one dimensional with only the always reliable Djimon Honsou bringing some class to proceedings.
I feel like Trash would be a better name for this movie as that’s really what it is, but I still had a fun time as there are a few decent kills and it is occasionally tense. There are almost too many characters to care about, so there isn’t any real emotional connection to anyone.
I did like Phoebe Dynevor as the pregnant Lisa although it was almost comedic how slowly her car was filling with water; I also loved how she was going to be doomed until a floating house randomly stopped just at the right spot for Dakota’s rescue. It’s utter nonsense, but that’s also what makes it enjoyable.
It’s also under 85 minutes long, so it’s well paced and doesn’t waste time getting going. The effects are mostly ok, although there is noticeable greenscreen and CG at times. If you want to watch a decent, modern shark flick I suggest Beast of War instead.
Overall, Thrash is your bog standard shark flick, but it’s still an entertaining enough Saturday night time waster with some decent kills and moments of tension.
