To Sequel or Not to Sequel: Upgrade (2018)

Upgrade is one of my favourite films of this year with a bonkers storyline and innovative fight scenes; Logan Marshall-Green made the role of Grey Trace his own. The film is set in the near-future, where technology controls nearly all aspects of life. But when Grey has his world turned upside down, his only hope for revenge is an experimental computer chip implant called Stem.

I’m not sure what its budget was but the film got a very limited theatrical release and I think it will gain traction on home video. It made $14 million worldwide at the box office which is far from amazing.

*SPOILERS AHEAD*

The film ends with Stem taking over Grey’s body completely leaving him in a mental state believing that it was all a dream and he is living happily ever after with his wife.

It’s actually a perfectly devastating finale and there are some potentially interesting directions you could take another story in like Grey’s battle to take his body and mind back from Stem but personally I would be happy to leave it as is and not do a follow up. Not every movie requires a sequel so I’m going to go with no.
