Although Casablanca’s story revolves around love, courage, and betrayal during wartime turmoil, a scene involving the European roulette wheel at Rick’s Café Américain is pivotal for the development of the character of Rick Blaine (played by Humphrey Bogart), the owner of Rick’s Café Américain. The scene shows Rick helping a young Bulgarian couple trying to escape the city of Casablanca. Being the owner of the cafe and the table, he knows that his roulette table is rigged, so he advises the man to put all of his chips on number 22. The ball lands on number 22. Then, he tells the young Bulgarian man to wager all of his chips on 22 again. He wins again.
Although the other players question the table’s fairness, this scene is pivotal to show that even though Rick is one of the toughest guys in Casablanca, he still has a soft spot.

Run Lola Run (1998)
Run Lola Run is a German thriller directed by Tom Tykwer and stars Franka Potente as Lola and Moritz Bleibtreu as her financially struggling boyfriend Manni. In the movie, Lola is desperately trying to save her boyfriend Manni after he loses a large amount of money to a ruthless gangster. She has only twenty minutes to find 100,000 Deutch Mark, so with nothing else left to do, she goes on a frantic journey through Berlin.
The movie features three alternate timelines. Although roulette does not play a role in the first two timeliness, which end tragically, the third timeline is the most important one. In this timeline, Lola grapples with the concept of fate and the impact of small decisions that might change her life. She enters a casino venue and, in true Casablanca fashion, decides to wager all of her money – 100 Deutch mark – on number 20. She wins. With a payout of 35:1, she now has 3,600 DM in chips. She wagers all of her money on number 20 again, and, miraculously, she wins!
With her roulette winnings, she saves her boyfriend and has some money to spare.
