What Next for James Bond?

Few characters have managed to light up the silver screen for such an enviable period of time as James Bond. Since the 1950s Bond has transcended his origins as the secret agent of Ian Fleming’s spy books to become the star of multiple blockbusters and online games.

But with constant rumours surrounding whether Daniel Craig has left the Bond role, it’s going to be interesting to see what steps the famous spy will take next. Over the years a string of white male actors have portrayed the star in the hit movies, and many are calling for a change in the casting of this iconic role.

Whoever gets the job will certainly have a tough act to follow. Each actor has brought their own take on the Bond role, with Sean Connery’s brooding presence perhaps being most famous thanks to his groundbreaking roles in the 1960s with lauded Bond movies such as From Russia With Love and Goldfinger.

Even Roger Moore’s slightly suave adaptation of Bond in hit 1970s films like Live And Let Die and Moonraker managed to successfully cement celebrated Bond motifs and catchphrases.

But it was in the 1990s that the James Bond franchise started to reach out beyond its origins with Pierce Brosnan’s hard-hitting roles in movies such as GoldenEye helping to launch the massively-successful Nintendo video game of the same name.

From here Bond made several successful excursions into video game culture. This culminated recently with the online casino site Betway offering assorted slots and games that featured the Agent Jane Blonde slot game that looks to capitalise on calls for a female Bond character whilst providing a user-friendly mobile gaming format for players.

Already many cultural commentators have speculated as to whether the likes of Cate Blanchett could play the next Bond. But further to this is the hope that we might actually see the first black James Bond as the British actor Idris Elba has catapulted himself into consideration thanks to a string of successful TV series and hit movies.

However, despite all of the speculation, there are signs that the Bond franchise look to be playing it safe for a while. This is because of reports that Aidan Turner, the star of the BBC historical drama Poldark, recently jetted off to Los Angeles to meet the next Bond movie’s producers.

But one thing’s for certain, and that’s that we look to be seeing no let up in online games and cinematic blockbusters from this iconic spy for many years to come.
