Nothing beats the suspense that a mission-impossible storyline brings to an action movie. Breaking into a heavily guarded casino, pulling off a seemingly foolproof heist, or surviving when everything goes wrong puts the viewer on the edge of their seat in the best way.
If that sounds like your kind of movie night, here are a few to consider.
Ocean’s Eleven (2001)
If you haven’t seen this one, it’s high time you did. Danny Ocean wants to rob three Las Vegas casinos at once, including the famous Bellagio, and has a well-oiled machine to pull it off. This was before free online slot games put casino play at your fingertips. Back then, you had to be at the scene of the crime (pun intended) if you wanted to walk out rich.
However, it’s not only the setting that makes the movie, but the team Danny gathers. A former casino insider, a pickpocket, a demolition expert, a surveillance man, and several other specialists fit perfectly into an absurdly complicated scheme.
And for a while, everything goes as planned. Until it doesn’t, and therein lies your payoff. The star-studded cast, including prime Clooney and Pitt, working under Soderbergh, is only the cherry on top.
Bullet Train (2022)
Here’s another Brad Pitt gem that hits just as hard, though over 20 years younger. Imagine a train and a bunch of assassins, all with completely different agendas, targeting/running from one another. That’s Bullet Train in a nutshell. One hell of a journey, from start to end, made even better by David Leitch and a cast clearly having a blast with the material.
The hilarious Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Brian Tyree Henry, the perpetually confused Pitt, the random Bad Bunny, the anxious Andrew Koji, and plenty of others fill the train with characters sporting some wonderfully ridiculous names. The action scenes are well-choreographed, the vibrant color scheme matches the high-octane pace, and the ending feels more than satisfying.
Mayday (2026)
Mayday is a solid pick if you’re a veteran action movie fan looking for something fresh. Once again, we have a heist involving millions, a carefully assembled crew, and a plan that sounds much easier on paper than it is. So, what makes it worth your time? Well, it’s got the old formula right.
The movie’s set against the 1980s nostalgia with timeless 80s hits, from Springsteen to Van Halen. It’s built on the great chemistry between Ryan Reynolds’ now-familiar Deadpool humor and Kenneth Branagh’s solid, deadpan performance. Plus, it packs a few attention-grabbing scenes, from the flight scuffle to the car chase.
So, while you might not remember it forever, it’s still an entertaining watch and an evening well spent.
One Battle After Another (2025)
For those up for a less conventional action pick, you can’t go wrong with One Battle After Another. For once, we’re not following a flawless action hero. DiCaprio’s Bob is a washed-up former radical failing to remember old contacts and passwords while desperately trying to find his daughter.
He stumbles where others would walk, lurches from one crisis to the next, but somehow manages to push forward with humor, and that’s exactly why the movie fits this list. That, and the most original car-chasing sequence you’ll have seen in recent years. Anderson turns the landscape into part of the action, making the whole thing feel unpredictable right up to the end, even though it runs for roughly 15 minutes.
13 Assassins (2010)
This Japanese samurai epic is a great watch if you’re up for something off the beaten path and don’t mind reading subtitles. We follow a group of 13 warriors tasked with taking down a sadistic lord. But their plan to take on an army of 200 is what makes this movie qualify for my “pulling the impossible” list.
You’ve got swords, arrows, fire, explosions, and some completely insane tactics. Everything leads to the final fight, where the bloodbath keeps your eyes glued to the screen. And yet, the film feels much more grounded than director Miike’s other works.
The practical sets, period costumes, and restrained visual effects put this chaotic movie far from the flashy CGI action we’re used to. It makes the sheer scale of what these 13 men are attempting even more impressive.
